Shoppers

This project observes how individuals in modern society develop personal identities within consumerism. Filling a cultural void and differentiating ourselves through what we have rather than through who we are. Constructing a persona and going on an endless quest for the perfect purchasible item that will enhance the image we portray to society.

In these images women's gestures and expressions communicate anxiety, tension and alienation. They seek ways to construct an all important self-image, but often lose themselves. Roots intact or fabricated, identities formed from lived expereinces or a set of media images, women are inevitably face to face with the frustrations, complications and harsh self-examination that accompany the act of shopping.
