Rhea was born in Lebanon and grew up between the United States and France. She is currently based in New York where she graduated from the International Center of Photography in 2007 and was the recipient of a director’s scholarship. Her work focuses on documenting the urban landscape with an emphasis on public walls and the role they play in our daily lives. The enriching dialogue created around and upon walls allow her to explore various themes such as history, displacement, identity, communication, censorship, architecture and the environment.

Although mainly photographic, her practice also includes paint, silkscreen, wheat pasting and various mixed media inspired from street art. In 2009 she published Breathing Walls, a book surveying the history of Lebanon through the walls of its streets. She later documented the walls of Egypt during the Egyptian revolution and began to participate in the dialogue taking place on the walls. This lead to projects such as Déraciné (Uprooted), where she wheat pasted images from trees shot in NY onto public walls throughout Lebanon playing on the idea of displacement and diaspora.

Rhea continues to work on public walls in NY, both with street installations and photography. Over the past ten years her representation of walls has shifted from documentary photography to a more abstract interpretation, pushing the boundaries of the medium. Through collage, sculpture, or more recently an artist book, she focuses on the importance of form and color within the urban landscape

for a simple poetic image, there is no project; a flicker of the soul is all that is needed.
